Cake
“Don’t Leave Me This Way (Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes cover)”
Live Bootleg: Sacramento 06-01-1996
Here’s a rare treat.
I’m often explaining that I’ve always been a big Cake fan, but no, not that kind of big Cake fan where I, like, get happy when their music comes on at a barbecue or whatever - No, what I mean is: I used to surf eBay to buy rare singles and cassette bootlegs of their old shows, go to every concert in Michigan, obsess over them.
I recorded some of the gems of those old Sacramento bootlegs today by putting Dave Geis’ Zoom recorder really close to Dave Geis’ cassette player. Not ideal, but neat to trap these sounds on my computer finally.

THE WINTER
by CAKE
(Showroom of Compassion, 2011)
Got the new CAKE album in the mail today, early because of Pre-Order. The Winter is my early contender for fav. Got To Move is something special too.
Also, from the inside cover:
“This album was written, rehearsed & recorded using 100% solar energy.”
Keep doing what you love and do it on your terms, John McCrea. CAKE has been around for 20 years and I wish them 20 more.

The Show Must Not Go On
by Harvey Danger
The final Harvey Danger track. It just appeared on the Harvey Danger Downloads page (where you can also download Dead Sea Scrolls and Little by Little and you should).
The posthumous final single, written for the band’s final tour in 2009, recorded with John Goodmanson shortly thereafter, then mixed and mastered just in time for the first anniversary of the very last show. Featuring Rob Knop on keyboards and Ryann Donnelly on harmony vocals.
I’m gonna miss this band. I’m excited for Sean Nelson to write and record more music at some point sometime. In the shadow of “Flagpole Sitta,” Harvey Danger became my little secret for the past 10 years.

(Don’t Be A Stranger, 2009)
Him: I get all excited, love.
Her: I think I need to hear some more.
Him: I think of you all the time.
Her: I still need to hear some more.
