Make Your Own Damn Movie was one of the first filmmaking books I read in college, I remember it inspired and motivated me, but it should’ve really been called “Make Your Own Troma Movie” — Recently, Lloyd Kauffman put out another couple books (Direct Your Own Damn Movie and Produce Your Own Damn Movie) and I got both of them for Christmas. Maaaan… Direct Your Own Damn Movie was rough. 200 pages of filler. I don’t mean to be mean, but they should call that book “How to Direct a Bad Movie plus Shit You Already Know plus A Few Inspirational Thoughts From Other Filmmakers.”
The point of this post is positive! I am finally digging through Produce Your Own Damn Movie and it’s pretty great. I’m gonna go ahead and recommend it for aspiring producer/director types - I think it’s the best in the series. Looking at his career, Lloyd Kaufman is more a producer and business man than anything else. It’s still full of Lloyd’s staple lame jokes and filler nonsense, but it’s got some real nice insight and perspective into this weird industry.
